The Old Guys Had It

Thousands of years ago these guys were building big ocean-going boats (and even bigger sheds to house them). Without maps, compasses or timepieces, the polynesians navigated the world's largest ocean. In 1997, I became aware of their craft - an asymmetric hull with a windward outrigger called a proa. Since then, it is my favorite design. Recent designers have applied modern technology to this multihull configuration. The results are amazing. More on this, and my design thoughts of a life on the water aboard a superior sailing craft, in future posts. For more about proas and other outriggers, www.proafile.com.
